Step 1
The cold pack supplied in the ankle sprain recovery kit is used to reduce pain following the ankle sprain. This is placed on the ankle on top of a moist cloth for cold treatment for 15 minutes at a time. It is also advised that you elevate the foot while delivering cold treatment at this stage of the ankle sprain.
Step 2
Use the ankle wrap to reduce swelling for the first few days of the sprain. The wrap is wound around the foot and ankle and is re-wrapped several times a day to control swelling.
Step 3
As it can take several months for your ankle to heal completely, this is the stage that the Aircast Air Stirrup should be worn. Wear the brace for the first two to three weeks whenever you are weight bearing on your injured foot. The brace should also be worn during activities after this until the ankle sprain is fully healed.
The Ankle Brace is easy to apply with two securing straps that enable you to adjust the compression and support to suit your requirements.
Step 4
It may take some time to bend your ankle so that when seated, you are able to bend your knee so that your foot is flat on the floor directly beneath your knee. However, it is critical for your recovery. Your injured ankle must be capable of achieving this position, with the ankle brace on, before standing or walking on your ankle.
Step 5
Walking is the next step in the treatment and recovery process. Protected movement (moving your ankle with the brace on) will help your ankle become healthy and strong. The Aircast Air Stirrup will protect your ankle and help reduce swelling as you walk.
Step 6
The final step is exercise. You will have to help your ankle regain its strength following an ankle sprain with exercise. The simple exercises contained on the DVD and included in the instructional booklet can be performed in your home or office.
When you begin performing the exercises, you may feel soreness around the ankle. This is completely normal. Listen to your body and progress from one exercise to the next as your ankle will allow.
